Disturbed by my Dustbin

As an avid tree-hugger and environmental enthusiast, I am disturbed when I look in my bin! I try to do all the right things – minimise food waste, separate what can be recycled but when I peer into my “landfill bin” and all I see is just plastic, I am simply disturbed!
Around the world - 1 million plastic bottles are bought every minute!
2 Million plastic bags are used every minute! How on earth can we be plastic free? The statistics are simply mortifying!
I have already started with the basics – refuse to use or accept a plastic straw, stopped drinking bottled water (now use a filtered re-usable bottle) shop with a re-usable bag, (but it’s always handy keeping a couple in the car just in case!) pack the kids lunch in a container rather than wrapping with plastic or foil.
It’s clearly our shopping habits need to change – and change drastically! I can’t buy my kids favourite cereal anymore because inside the cardboard box it’s wrapped in plastic. My staple food – pasta is enclosed in plastic and can you even buy milk that is not in a plastic container? I am not even sure you can still get milk delivered to your door anymore?
What is even more worrying, is that plastic is now in our food chain – we simply can’t escape it! We need to innovate as consumers and shop around at specialists stores that stock non-plastic products, stores close to us – here’s a great list if you live in Norwich. This is a challenge we all need to embrace if we are to survive!
I take my tinfoil hat off to anyone who claims that they can live a life free of plastic – but here is a list of 100 things you could do in an attempt to be plastic free.
Take the challenge – I dare you!
